With the integration of multi-core implementation into the certified code base, SYSGO strengthens the profile of PikeOS Safe and Secure Virtualization (SSV) compared to competing products and, with the new version 3.1, preserves one of the main advantages of PikeOS technology: The same core components developed for safety-critical applications in aviation are also available for the market segments of industrial automation, transportation, medicine, etc. Unlike other RTOS, PikeOS isolates market- and application-specific components in so-called "personalities", a SYSGO concept that allows all customers to benefit from the proven security of the PikeOS system software and microkernel.
"We see PikeOS becoming the reference in the field of a new generation of RTOS," emphasises Michael Tiedemann, CEO of SYSGO, "The SSV concept developed by us as the first manufacturer shows a clear advantage over other solutions that combine traditional RTOS with immature hypervisor technologies. The new version 3.1 has been very positively received by our customers in avionics. Developers from other application areas are also convinced by this secure approach to multi-core support."
The multi-core implementation of PikeOS 3.1 is just the first implementation of an even more exciting feature planned for PikeOS 4.0 in Q4 2010. In the future, a flexible approach will allow the user to freely determine the execution model of the multi-core support: From pure AMP (Asymmetric Multi-Processing) to full SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing). The SSV design developed by SYSGO is particularly well suited for multi-core architectures. Resource and time partitioning makes it easier for the user to develop and configure concurrent applications on the multi-core: Only core allocation requires a new action by the user, all other partitioning specifications remain the same.
The DO-178 B certified version 3.1 clearly expresses the product philosophy of PikeOS. Safety and security are built into the design of the core components. These core components are available to all customers, regardless of whether certification is required or not. The high level of safety is a great advantage for all systems. Market and application specific functionalities can be selected from a wide range of different personalities.
PikeOS 3.1 is the first solution on the market to integrate multi-core into the certified code base, providing a user-friendly and powerful advanced SMP implementation. Furthermore, in line with the PikeOS product philosophy, the hardware remains unaffected by this flexible model of multi-core support.
Availability
PikeOS 3.1 is available now. PikeOS supports the x86, PowerPC, MIPS, ARM and SPARC processor families and offers the following personalities: PikeOS Native, ARINC 653, Linux, POSIX, and Certified POSIX. The multi-core implementation for the Intel families. Available host platforms are Windows and Linux.
About PikeOS
PikeOS is a virtualisation platform and operating system for embedded systems that enables multiple virtual machines to run simultaneously in a secure environment. The SSV (Safe and Secure Virtualization) technology offers multiple operating system interfaces, so-called "personalities", which can run simultaneously on one hardware, e.g. a safety-critical ARINC 653 application together with Linux. Due to its microkernel architecture, PikeOS can be used in price-sensitive devices with limited resources as well as in large, complex systems. The compactness and clarity of PikeOS's system design provides real-time performance equivalent to conventional real-time operating systems. PikeOS is MILS compliant and certifiable to safety standards such as DO-178B, IEC 61508 or EN 50128.
