The Use of RTOS to implement Avionics Software-defined Radios

Whitepapers, Avionics & Defense

Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) is a modern Avionics system in aircraft that consolidates multiple functions into a shared computing environment, unlike traditional systems with dedicated hardware for each function. Aircraft radios play a vital role in Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) by facilitating communication with air traffic control, navigation, and airspace monitoring. Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology enables direct radio frequency processing, removing the need for intermediate frequency conversion. This consolidation into one Line-Replaceable Unit (LRU) significantly reduces Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP).

This whitepaper outlines how multiple Avionics radios can be consolidated through SDR technology, using specialized Radio-frequency (RF) hardware and software tools to partition multiple SDR applications within an IMA environment.
